Co-Manager

The McIntyre Ranch is located approximately 50km south of Lethbridge, Alberta. Position Summary:
We are seeking a hardworking, dedicated, and skilled Co-Manager to join our team. As a Co-Manager, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operations of the ranch. Taking direction from the President/CEO, the Co-Managers will be leading and managing the Foreman, Administration and Ranch Hands to ensure the well-being of our range health, livestock, staff and all other aspects contributing to the overall success of our operations. The Co-Managers work closely with the Foreman to collaborate on operational planning and company policies. 

The Co-Managers oversee everything involving staff, range health, water, fencing, cattle, horses, buildings, corrals, feed purchasing, feeding, salting, misc. purchases, etc. 

Work Environment:

The Co-Managers work together, and with the Foreman regularly, to discuss planning, scheduling and decision making for ongoing operations. Work at the ranch is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions and is about 40% of the job, and the remaining 60% of the job is spent in the Lethbridge office. The Co-Managers are expected to function with considerable flexibility to accomplish all operations. The Co-Managers are expected to be “on-call” at all times. All staff are expected to function in a mature, responsible and respectful manner to help us achieve a healthy long-term working relationship.

Responsibilities: 

  • Management
    • Provide strong leadership and direction to Administration, the Foreman and Ranch Hands, ensuring alignment with the company’s vision and goals.
    • Develop and implement strategic plans and policies to drive business growth and profitability.
    • Oversee daily operations, ensuring efficiency, quality, and compliance with company values.
    • Manage budgets, financial performance, and reporting, ensuring financial health and sustainability.
    • Recruit, train, and develop a high-performing team, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
    • Maintain and enhance relationships with employees, board members, clients and partners.
  • Livestock Care:
    • Monitoring herd health and condition.
    • Build the feeding and bedding rations during winter months.
    • General herd management (assist in calving, branding, processing, etc.)
    • Cattle movements, including gathering, sorting, and rotational grazing.
    • Scheduling and working with veterinarians.
  • Land and Facility Maintenance:
    • Identify repairs and maintain fences, gates, and corrals.
    • Schedule and detail general upkeep of ranch equipment, vehicles, and structures.
    • Monitor and report on range health, water and salt conditions with the Foreman.
    • Building financial budgets for capital expenditures and maintenance.
    • Coordinating with subcontractors on updating and repairs of facilities. 
  • Other Duties:
    • Conduct cost/benefit analysis reports for business strategies, equipment and infrastructure projects.
    • Create and present financial reports, operational reports and various other reports for board meetings.  
    • Purebred genetic selection, including heifer replacements, herd sire purchases, purebred cow breeding.
    • Overseeing tenancy agreements/disputes of onsite staff.
    • Management of backgrounding calves/yearlings and sales of livestock.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working on a cattle ranch in a similar role is an asset.
  • Experience managing people. 
  • Strong interest in livestock and agricultural business.
  • Attention to detail for addressing maintenance of ranch buildings, roads, corrals, and other equipment. 
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and adaptability to changing tasks and weather conditions.
  • Physically fit and capable of performing manual labor in various weather conditions.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license is required
  • Post secondary degree in business management or related field is an asset. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft office.
