About the McIntyre Ranch:
The McIntyre Ranch is located approximately 50km south of Lethbridge, Alberta. It is one of the most iconic and historic ranches in Southern Alberta, offering sprawling landscapes and a legacy of exceptional ranching practices. Position Summary:
We are seeking a hardworking, dedicated, and skilled Foreman to join our team. As a Foreman, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operations of the ranch, leading and managing the Ranch Hands to ensure the well-being of the range health, our livestock, maintaining facilities, and contributing to the overall success of our operations. The Foreman works closely with the Co-Managers to contribute and implement the planning and policy decisions made by the Management team.
The Foreman oversees matters involving staff, range health, water, fencing, cattle, horses, buildings, corrals, feed purchasing, feeding, salting, misc. purchases and everything else that happens on the Ranch.
Work Environment:
The Foreman works with the Co-Managers regularly to discuss planning, scheduling and decision making for ongoing operations. Work is primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions. The Foreman is expected to function with considerable flexibility to accomplish all operations. The expectation is to be “on-call”, as the Foreman is the first point of contact for direct Ranch operations. All staff are expected to function in a mature, responsible and respectful manner to help us achieve a healthy long-term working relationship,
Responsibilities:
- Management
- Daily email to the staff notifying what operations everyone will work on the following day.
- Communicating, reporting, and resolving staff disputes.
- Assist Co-Managers in building schedules and time-off requests.
- Implementation of company policies and guidelines.
- Work with Co-Managers on staffing, capital expenses, herd capacity.
- Livestock Care:
- Monitor/treat cattle (all things related with animal husbandry).
- Build the feeding and bedding rations during winter months.
- General herd management (assist in calving, branding, processing, etc.)
- Cattle movements, including gathering, sorting, and rotational grazing.
- Land and Facility Maintenance:
- Identify repairs and maintain fences, gates, and corrals.
- Schedule and perform general upkeep of ranch equipment, vehicles, and structures.
- Monitor and report on grass, water and salt conditions with the Co-Managers.
- Equipment Operation:
- Safely operate and maintain ranch machinery, such as tractors, ATVs, and trucks.
- Schedule and perform minor mechanical repairs and regular maintenance on equipment.
- Snow removal when necessary.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Previous experience working on a cattle ranch in a similar role.
- Strong understanding of livestock handling techniques and animal health.
- Knowledge and understanding of MS Excel is an asset.
- Attention to detail for addressing maintenance of Ranch buildings, roads, corrals, and other equipment.
- High level of comfort working with computers.
- Ability to identify and address mechanical issues with machinery.
- Ability to rope from horseback.
- Ability to safely operate machinery and tools.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and adaptability to changing tasks and weather conditions.
- Physically fit and capable of performing manual labor in various weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license – Class 1 license is an asset.
- Living onsite is mandatory, housing is provided for a rental rate (and is contingent on employment).
